North Macedonia’s Ruling Coalition Leads Majority in Local Elections
With approximately 70% of votes tallied, the bloc led by the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) is dominating most regions.
Meanwhile, the opposition alliance, the Social Democratic Union (SDSM), is leading in nine municipalities, and the VMRO-DPMNE’s coalition partner, the VLEN alliance, is ahead in eight areas.
The National Alliance for Integration (AKI) has taken the lead in five municipalities, and the Turkish Democratic Party (TDP) secured victory in one.
However, the election outcome in Centar Zupa was invalidated due to voter turnout falling below one-third of registered voters.
In the capital city of Skopje, over half of the votes have been counted, with VMRO-DPMNE currently leading with 41.23% of the vote share.
In the Cair municipality, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Izet Mexhiti, declared his triumph over former Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani.
The overall voter turnout nationwide was recorded at 46.65%.
Municipalities where no candidate achieved more than 50% of votes will proceed to a runoff election scheduled for November 2.
Local elections in North Macedonia take place every four years. This marks the eighth election cycle since 1996.
A total of 10,490 candidates competed, including 309 vying for mayoral positions.
Additionally, 1,451 observers were accredited to monitor the elections, comprising 644 foreign and 807 local observers, among them two representatives from Türkiye’s Supreme Election Council.
